The Rockford United Methodist Church believes in answering God's call to
serve others who are less fortunate. The Mission Committee's vision
statement is to provide opportunities to make Disciples for Jesus
Christ.
Appalachia Service Project is a Christian home repair ministry, affiliated with the General Board of Discipleship of the United Methodist Church, but open to all. Next year's trip will be June 23 - 30, 2012.
Bread Pan Offering
Each week an offering is collected in bread pans to serve the basic needs of others. Through the bread pan offering, RUMC contributes to 9 international agencies, 7 U.S. agencies, 6 Out-State Michigan agencies, and 18 Kent County/Rockford agencies each year.
"Praise the Lord, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word. Praise the Lord, all His heavenly hosts, you His servants who do His will." Psalms 103:20-21 BREAD PANS "I've been thinking," said Pooh, "and what I've been thinking is this. I've been thinking about Eeyore." "What about Eeyore?" asked Piglet. "Well, poor Eeyore has nowhere to live." "Nor he has," said Piglet. "You have a house Piglet, and I have a house, and they are very good houses. And Christopher Robin has a house, and Owl and Kanga and Rabbit have houses, and even Rabbit's friends and relations have houses or something, but poor Eeyore has nothing. So what I've been thinking is: Let's build him a house." February 5 - Africa University Retreat Center Project - A project that is being entirely funded by West Michigan United Methodist Churches, the retreat center will enable visiting teachers, clergy, mission groups, etc. a place to stay at Africa University (instead of traveling hours to and from the nearest hotel). When asked why Africa University is any better than other African universities, one student said: "Because Africa University is run like an American university, they hold you accountable to learn all that you can possibly learn." "Hope for Africa lies in education." February 12 -Appalachia Service Project Team - ASP is a senior high youth mission where you rebuild poverty level homes to make them safer, drier, and warmer each summer in the Appalachia regions of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. They also work year round on a smaller scale emergency basis. This bread pan money will help send the RUMC team of 45 youth/adult volunteers (six crews) to Tennessee this summer. Along with the high school youth, adults with knowledge of construction and/or the desire to help our youth be Disciples of Jesus Christ, also go on this mission trip to serve some of God's less fortunate people. February 19 and 26 - Habitat for Humanity of Kent County - Bread pan funds will go toward the houses being built in Kent County in 2012. The families who buy Habitat Homes are people who are trying to take care of their needs without the help of others, but cannot afford simple, decent housing for their families. Habitat helps these families by offering low interest rates. The head of the households have to put in 150 hours of work on their own home and 150 hours of work on other Habitat Homes as part of the package. RUMC will participate in the building of Habitat Homes again this year, so look for those dates.
RUMC will once again partner with Parkside Elementary school to create a mentoring program for some of it's students.
CROP walk is neighbors walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting. RUMC participates with other area churches.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing ministry which works with people such as volunteers from RUMC to build simple, decent, affordable houses with those who lack adequate shelter. More information and pictures from our 2010 house are available here.
